If ye are prepared ye shall not fear

“Acquire and store a reserve of food and supplies that will sustain life. . . . As long as I can remember, we have been taught to prepare for the future and to obtain a year's supply of necessities. I would guess that the years of plenty have almost universally caused us to set aside this counsel. I believe the time to disregard this counsel is over. With events in the world today, it must be considered with all seriousness” -L. Tom Perry (“If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 36).

I have been wanting to start building up my food storage for quite a few years now. I get really excited about it every once in a while and I say "YEAH we're going to do this! And then we'll have an awesome food supply!"

I buy one can of potato pearls and then I totally forget about it for months. Sound familiar?

My mom sent me an email years ago with a schedule made up to buy 1 item of food storage a week for a whole year. It breaks it up so it's easy to do. You can see the schedule
here. And there's also a link on the side here that says "2011 Schedule". By the end of 2011, if you follow the schedule, you'll have an awesome start to your year supply and $200 saved up. Plus, you won't be stressed out about not having any food storage!

I hope this schedule will be helpful to many of you who are just getting started like me. Don't stress out. If money is tight one week, get 6 cans of tuna instead of the 12 like it says. Or even 2. Just get something every week.

Now when it comes to rotation and what to DO with 12 cans of tuna.... I'll have to do some studying but at least you'll
have 12 cans of tuna. :)

The leaders of our church have been telling us for YEARS to build up our food storage. They mean it. We're going to need it. And soon. Let us be one of the 5 wise virgins and fill our 'lamps' now.

I hope this blog will help us all do just that.

"Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing” (see D&C 109:8) so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.

"We encourage members world-wide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings.

"We ask that you be wise as you store food and water and build your savings. Do not go to extremes; it is not prudent, for example, to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve."
